We’ve all made mistakes in our lives. Sometimes we learn from those mistakes. Other times, we are just doomed to repeat them. There’s one more thing that you can do about your mistakes – accidentally create a popular item that revolutionizes a certain industry or changes the world forever. Here are 5 such things.

1.) Post-it Notes

In 1968, a Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist, accidentally invented an adhesive substance that could be reused. Unfortunately, no one at 3M or elsewhere thought much of this adhesive material and it remained without a use until 1974. In that year, Arthur Fry came up with the idea of using that adhesive material to make his bookmarks stick in his hymnbook. In 1977, 3M launched the Post-it, but it failed because no one knew what to do with it exactly. They started giving out free samples, and in 1980, the product was a success and was sold throughout the country.

2.) Slinky

Richard James, a naval engineer, was trying to develop a spring that would stabilize and support very sensitive equipment on ships and cruisers in 1943. When James accidentally knocked one of these springs off a shelf, he watched in amazement as it continued moving. He experimented with different types of steel wires and tensions until he found the one that worked best. His wife Betty called it the “Slinky,” which meant sleek and graceful. They sold their invention at $1 a piece.

3.) Potato Chips

George Crum was an annoyed chef in 1853. One of his customers kept sending back his fried potatoes, claiming they were too thick and soggy. Crum decided to slice the potatoes so thin, that the customer wouldn’t be able to use a fork. He also stir-fried the slices and put some extra salt on it. To his surprise, the customer loved these new “chips.” Crum dubbed them “Saratoga Chips.” They became popular in the Northeastern United States and soon spread like wildfire.

4.) The Sandwich

While the sandwich itself wasn’t invented by John Montagu, it was sure named after him. You see, Montagu was the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He ordered his valet and attendant to bring him meat between two pieces of bread. Since Montagu was an Earl, others in his area wanted the same as him and ordered “the same as Sandwich!” While this is still under debate, it is the most common story told regarding the sandwich.

5.) Popsicles

Frank Epperson was just 11 in 1905 when he accidentally created the popsicle. He left a mixture of of powered soda and water out on his porch, leaving his stirring stick in the mixture too. It just so happened that San Francisco’s weather reached a record low that night. The next morning, Epperson woke up to his mixture frozen on a stick. He called it the Epsicle. 18 years later, he revealed his creation to the public and renamed it the Popsicle, at his children’s request.

First known as EarthViewer3D, Google Earth officially came out in 2005. Since then, the program has upgraded from low resolution blurry images to the extremely high resolution images. In fact, the images are getting so clear that on the closest zoom, you can almost read the street signs. Here are just 7 images that have been found on Google Earth.

Life is moving at such a fast pace. Technology changes everyday. Something you buy today will become obsolete the moment you walk out of the store. Here are 8 things that will disappear by the year 2020.

1.) Landline Phones

With cell phones, the internet, and video conferencing, who really needs a landline? Sure, maybe office buildings and other commercial properties will have them, but the landline will all but disappear from residential homes.

2.) Dial-up Internet

Relatively cheap prices and the proliferation of high speed internet will put the final nail in the dial-up coffin. Kids 15 years from now will ask what was dial-up and how did we surf the internet with it.

3.) The Mail

Email has slowly killed post offices everywhere. The biggest customer of the USPS, Netflix, has the option to watch movies directly on your computer. Banking and bill paying are going paperless. While the mail service, envelopes, will slowly disappear, package delivery is here to stay.

4.) Newspapers

Thousands of newspapers across the world are shutting down and/or going exclusively online. The advertising dollars are not able to keep funding the paper operations. Advertisers are putting their ads for free on sites like craigslist. Goodbye newspapers.

5.) Compact discs

Does anyone buy music CDs anymore? With iTunes and illegal downloading becoming the best ways to get music, CDs will slowly disappear from stores.

6.) Printed books

With the iPad, Kindle and other e-readers becoming ubiquitous, printed books will all be digital. While books might be the longest lasting thing on this list, they will eventually succumb to technology.

7.) Privacy

Privacy will be a thing of the past in 10 years (if it isn’t already). Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have brought what you ate for breakfast into the public spotlight. And with the speed in which information is disseminated, nothing will stay private for long.

8.) Getting lost

It will be pretty difficult to get lost in 10 years. Almost every cell phone will come with a GPS system, so it won’t matter if you’re in the middle of New York City or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, you will find a way to get back home.

Apple unveiled their highly anticipated tablet computer, the iPad. While the product has the tech world abuzz, everyone can agree on one thing: The name sucks. Usually the marketing people at Apple are renowned for their ability to brand and market products, but they dropped the ball on this one. Here are 5 names that would have been better than iPad.

1.) iSlate

The most popular name for the product before the official unveiling. iSlate would have made a great name because it just sounds cool. I have an “iSlate.” It just rolls off your tongue.

2.) iTablet

Another popular name among the tech world. Why not name your product after what it is actually while adding a little Apple flare to it?

3.) Really Big iPod Touch

Alright look, the iPad is just a really big iPod Touch/iPhone. Why not call it that?

4.) iCouldn’t Think of a Good Name

Steve Jobs and his marketing team should just admit that he couldn’t think of a good name so just settled for iPad.

5.) Tampod

If Apple is looking to attract the female demographic, there’s no better name to have than the Tampod.
