The 2009 NFL season is just around the corner, and with that, comes fantasy football drafts. Fantasy football is THE fantasy sport. A time for people to gather and debate and for one person to get bragging rights for the rest of the year. Many a dream have been made, and destroyed, during fantasy football drafts. I recently participated in a fantasy football draft this weekend, and I noticed that some players (you know which ones, the ones that are always at the bottom of the standings) tend to do the same things every year and we laugh at them. There’s a good cance someone in your league does these things. What do they do? Read on to find out how to lose your fantasy football league…

1.) Selecting a backup kicker

Really? You need a backup kicker? Why? You can use that spot for a player, anybody really. What’s that you say? Your kicker is on a bye this week? Ok, so drop him and add another one. I’m pretty sure teams will not ruin their waiver claim on your kicker. You can pick him back up next week.

2.) Not showing up to the draft

This one is pretty self explanatory. You get what the league gives you. No questions asked.

3.) Drafting like its 2005 or 2006

Look, I know Larry Johnson was a beast a few years ago. I know Shaun Alexander broke the record for most TDs in a season once. But, let’s be honest here. They are washed up and hoping for a revival will end up in your time being in the basement. (Especially if these guys are one of your starters).

4.) Drafting a player, not knowing how long he is injured/suspended for (or if he is going to be suspended)

Keep up on your current events please. Don’t be the guy who takes Plaxico Burress in the early rounds, or at all. This leads me to…

5.) Picking the “buzz” player, even though the player isn’t all the great in the first place

I know you love Brett Favre. I know Michael Vick is “tempting.” But seriously, there are so many other options out there that are better than those players. Don’t fall into the trap.

6.) Asking the league settings during the draft

Is this a PPR league? How many running backs do we start? Those questions basically mean you don’t care to win, and you haven’t devised a strategy at all. Or maybe you have, and it is all part of your secret plan.
