Telephone numbers have been around since before the turn of the 19th century. With the addition of cell phones, there are now billion of numbers and combinations worldwide. Among those billions of numbers though, 6 of them have managed to become famous.

1.) 9-1-1 (Emergency Services)

The number 9-1-1 is known by almost everyone in North America. It is the number to call in case of emergencies. While prank calling 9-1-1 can cause a lot of trouble for the caller(s), an accidental call won’t cause punishment once the operator knows it was a mistake.

2.) 777-9311 (The Time)

This number was a single by the band The Time, which was a Prince associate. The number actually belonged to Dez Dickerson, a member of Prince’s band, The Revolution. He had to change it once the song became popular.

3.) 281-330-8004 (Mike Jones)

In rapper Mike Jones’s song “Back Then” (and other songs), Jones gave out this number telling fans to call him. The number is set up as a voicemail for fans to leave a message for the rapper and he will call them back.

4.) 1-900-MIX-ALOT (Sir Mix-a-Lot)

In Sir Mix-a-Lot’s popular song “Baby Got Back,” he tells ladies to call that number to “kick their nasty thoughts.”

5.) 678-999-8212 (Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em)

The number was used in the song “Kiss Me Thru the Phone.” Similar to Jones, if you call that number, you will get a voicemail message. After you call the number, you will receive updates about the singer’s upcoming events and albums.

6.) 867-5309 (Tommy Tutone)

Possibly the most famous number of all, the song “867-5309/Jenny,” caused millions of people to dial the number and ask for Jenny. Imagine the grief for all the owners of this number. Almost all of the numbers are no longer in service due to the massive amount of calls received. In fact, the number has gained such prominence that it has been listed on eBay in various area codes.

One of the most influential and popular sagas in the history of film has been Star Wars. The movies ushered in an era of Hollywood blockbusters that put an emphasis on advanced special effects. With such a focus on the effects, sometimes plots and character development have taken a backseat. Characters do things that make you scratch your head or make you think “What an idiot.” Here are those moments from the Star Wars saga.

1.) Luke throwing his lightsaber away in front of the Emperor after his battle with Darth Vader on Death Star II

Luke Skywalker is perhaps the worst example of the “listening to your elders” quote. When he returns to Dagobah in Return of the Jedi, Yoda specifically says “Do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor.” Yoda should know, he battled him in Revenge of the Sith. So what does Luke do after he defeats Vader in a lightsable battle and is offered to join the Sith? He throws his lightsaber away. Sure, he was making a statement, but couldn’t he have done that in another way instead of throwing away his only weapon? Clearly, he underestimated the Emperor. Did he think the Emperor was going to just let him walk away freely?

2.) Darth Maul not kicking Qui-Gon Jinn’s lightsaber into Theed’s Generator pit

You could chalk this one up to being in the heat of the moment. After Darth Maul slays Qui-Gon Jinn, he turns to face Obi-Wan. After Maul force pushes Obi-Wan into the pit and he is holding on, Maul kicks Obi-Wan’s lightsaber into the pit. Obi-Wan then jumps up and uses Jinn’s lightsaber to kill Maul. Now, if Maul had just kicked Jinn’s lightsaber as well, then the Star Wars saga might have been entirely different. Wouldn’t you get rid of all potential weapons your enemy would use against you? Apparently not.

3.) Luke’s Plan to rescue Han Solo from Tatooine

Luke’s plan to rescue Han Solo from Tatooine is just plain dumb. He sends C-3PO and R2-D2 to Jabba the Hutt, with R2 holding his lightsaber (again, his only weapon). He offers the droids in exchange for Solo, and of course Jabba says no and keeps the droids. The next part of the plan was to have Princess Leia disguise herself as a bounty hunter and bring in a “captured” Chewbacca and then free Han in the night. When that didn’t work, the third part of the plan involved Luke trying to use a Jedi mind trick and a blaster on Jabba, which again failed. The last part involved R2-D2 shooting Luke’s lightsaber to him while Luke was being sent to the Great Pit of Carkoon. Luke and friends then destroyed their enemies and killed Jabba. All in the plan, right? All Luke had to do was just walk in, use his Jedi powers to kill Jabba or sneak in at night and free Han himself. No need to risk Leia’s, Lando’s, Han’s or Chewbacca’s life. Idiot.

4.) The Rebels still going to the Rebel base at Yavin 4, despite having feelings they were being tracked

Princess Leia really pulls a “Luke” toward the end of A New Hope. Thinking that the escape from the Death Star was a little too easy, and feeling Vader is tracking the Millennium Falcon, what does she decide to do as a leader of the Rebellion? SHE TAKES THE CREW TO THE REBEL BASE! Might as well hold up a sign that says “Please shoot me, we are here” We can forgive her with her slave outfit though. Although Han still claims “not this ship!” in regards to him being tracked

5.) Letting Anakin be trained as a Jedi

Yoda even said himself that his future was “clouded”. If he was never trained, then who knows what could have been of the Republic? For all the moves that happened, this is the dumbest.

Comic-Con 2009 is officially over. However, our work at The Blogington is never finished. As a wrap up to honor Comic-Con and to prepare for the 2010 edition, here are the top 10 cartoon characters in history in reverse order. (Note: No computer generated characters are on this list, perhaps that will be for another time)

10.) Fred Flintstone

Yabba Dabba Doo! – the trademark call of Fred Flintstone, patriarch of the Flintstone family. Living in Bedrock, Fred worked at Slate Rock and Gravel Company working on a brontosaurus and trying to support his family. While Fred wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box, he did have some skills such as bowling and and billiards. What makes him a top 10 character is that Fred was the precursor to the the slow-witted fathers with morally upstanding and attractive wives – most notably Homer Simpson and Peter Griffin.Fred continues to be a mainstay in Hanna-Barbera culture and despite the show ending its television run in 1966, there have been live-action films and other crossover events involving Fred Flintstone and the rest of the family. This is a testament to the character’s popularity and place in history.

9.) Scooby-Doo

Scooby Dooby Doo! Scooby-Doo may possibly be the most famous Great Dane in history. Along with his best friend Shaggy, Scooby always ran at the first sight of danger or trouble. What makes Scooby the #9 cartoon character was his unique way of speaking, likability of the character itself (dogs are man’s best friend after all), and longevity. Scooby always spoke with an R in front of his words and would always get into trouble with Shaggy. The show itself is still running and going on 40 years now. There have also been live-action films with the Scooby character in CGI. Who wouldn’t want to have Scooby for a pet/best friend? Since Scooby is so likable, we might forgive him for Scrappy-Doo. Maybe.

8.) Donald Duck

Donald Duck outshines his coworker and friendly rival Mickey Mouse. He is generally a nice duck, not wanting to hurt anyone until something goes and makes him mad, because of his extremely short temper. However, the most important and identifiable thing about Donald is his voice. His somewhat hard to understand voice can be recognized anywhere around the world. The man who was behind the voice, Clarence Nash, even groomed Tony Anselmo for the job, which he still holds today. Donald is also notoriously famous for not wearing any pants, but yet wears a sailor’s outfit. Donald has spawned other family members, including his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. Europeans love Donald, and is extremely popular in Nordic countries and Germany, even more popular than Mickey Mouse.

7.) Beavis and Butt-head

Ah, Beavis and Butt-head. The bane of family organizations everywhere, the comedy duo was a sensation in the 1990s. The show followed the pair’s misadventures, as they often got into life threatening situations (they never got hurt, only the people around them) and were seemingly unaware of it.
Throughout the show’s run, there was controversy, which helped cement their place as #7 on the list. Beavis and Butt-head’s signature was their laughing, as many time they would just laugh on screen for minutes with nothing else happening. They were teenage misfits that some people found to identify with, especially as the hip-hop/punk rock genre was emerging. The duo even had their own feature film, which received good reviews. Not bad for a pair of idiotic teenagers without an ambition in the world.

5.) Stewie Griffin

Stewie Griffin is one year old. He speaks perfect English (in a British accent, no less), recites poetry, and designs advanced weaponry based on his genius level intellect. Sound far fetched? Sure, but Stewie makes it so enjoyable to watch. He is intent on killing his mother and dominating the world, yet the Teletubbies and his teddy bear Rupert can stop him in his tracks immediately. It is his unyielding effort to kill his mother, Lois, that is a major plot in Family Guy, and he is the show’s star player. The manner in which he says things can make any serious person fall on the floor laughing. Despite being less than 4 feet tall and only one year old, do not ever underestimate Stewie Griffin, because he’s probably smarter than you. If Family Guy can continue to stay on the air, there’s a good chance that Stewie Griffin could be even higher than his current position at #5.

4.) Ren and Stimpy

Ren and Stimpy pushed the envelope for crude humor even before Beavis and Butt-head. The main difference: the show was on Nickelodeon, a mainly children’s network at the time. Ren was a chihuahua while Stimpy was a cat. Their unique appearances aside, Ren was the intelligent one and usually devised schemes for the duo to execute. He was sometimes psychotic and had a trademark evil laugh. Stimpy, on the other hand, was naive and slow on the uptake, but had a good heart. Stimpy also coined the popular phrase “Happy Happy, Joy Joy.” The interaction between the two characters was priceless, and helped usher in a new era of Nicktoons. The characters were the cute and cuddly versions of Beavis and Butt-head, but the intelligence of Ren made it even more enjoyable to watch. They are #4 on the list because of the fact they pushed the envelope on a station primarily for kids, and there have even been banned episodes. The characters will always be the best Nicktoons.

3.) Eric Cartman

If Ren and Stimpy pushed the envelope for crude and unusual humor, then Eric Cartman passed the envelope and left it in its dust. He once killed his rival’s parents, and then served them to him in a bowl of chili. It doesn’t get any better than that. Cartman is hated by everyone in South Park, and he hates them too, especially classmate Kyle. Cartman continues to make fun of Kyle for being Jewish, which is a running gag on the show. His evilness knows no boundaries and if he wants revenge, he will get revenge. This has led to some of the most memorable moments in South Park’s history belonging to Eric Cartman, helping him achieve #3. The more rude and profane he is, the more liked he becomes by the audience. He even bough a theme park just so Stan and Kyle couldn’t come in. If there is a boundary, limit, or political arena that Cartman hasn’t gone, you can sure bet that he will go there in future episodes of South Park because that’s what Cartman does.

2.) Bugs Bunny

Ehhh, what’s up doc? That is the iconic catch phrase of Looney Tunes legend Bugs Bunny. Bugs first appeared in 1940 and has been living the dream ever since. He is the company mascot of Warner Bros., has his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, has a U.S. postage stamp, and is BFFs with Michael Jordan. Bugs Bunny is not just a cartoon character, but also a transcendent comic in his own right. Bugs’s distinct vocal style is known the world over, and his witty remarks still remain funny today. His rivalries with Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck usually end up in Bugs emerging victorious. His popularity has lasted throughout generations, and continues to grow with the addition of full length feature films such as Space Jam. 100 years from now, Bugs Bunny will still be funny and popular. That’s a testament to his legacy.

1.) Homer Simpson

Here we are at number 1. The greatest cartoon character of all time is Homer Simpson. Like Bugs Bunny, Homer (and the rest of his family) has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The voice of the character has won three Emmy awards. Homer is supposed to represent the overweight, lazy, uneducated worker stereotype. However, Homer has had many amazing accomplishments over his life, including going into space, bowling a 300 game, owning the Denver Broncos, and solving an ancient Egyptian puzzle. His catchphrase “D’oh!” has been added to dictionaries and is now an official word. The way he salivates at the sight of a donut or seeing him strangle Bart will make even the most serious people in the world chuckle. You can find a little bit of Homer in almost everyone, and that’s what makes the character so appealing. Despite all his faults and borderline alcoholism, Homer is a good dad to his kids (although he sometimes forgets he has Maggie). That’s the true beauty of Homer: he can be annoying, act foolishly, make you think less of him but then warms your heart at the end of the day. That is why Homer Simpson is #1.

Comic-Con 2009 is now in full force in San Diego, California. Previously, we listed the top 5 superheroes in comic book history. Now we will explore the opposite of that, the top 5 supervillains in comic book history. And here…we….go!

5.) Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor is the famous archrival of Superman, who is bent on killing him through any means possible. While Lex is certainly not a powerful foe in the comics in terms of sheer strength, he has the resources and intellect to carry out any scheme he desires. He even becomes President of the United States and starts affecting other DC comic characters such as Batman. Lex also is revealed to have known Superman before he became Superman (when he was Clark Kent in Smallville). Lex is ruthless, wealthy, determined, and intelligent, and is the perfect foil to a somewhat boring Superman character. Plus, he makes for a great comic book cover.

4.) Green Goblin

The Green Goblin is notorious for his reappearances in Spider-Man comics. In one of the most famous events in comic history, the Green Goblin successfully killed Spider-Man’s girlfriend, Gwen Stacy by throwing her off the George Washington Bridge. Spider-Man tried to save her with his webbing, but he snapped her neck in the process and a whole new age of comic books was born. The Green Goblin was the first to make a superhero fail at his task. His power stems from his ability to stay sane, which seems to be a problem for him. His popularity became even greater with the first feature film, Spider-Man. No matter what happens to him in the films or comic books, The Goblin will be remembered for his killing of Gwen Stacy. Besides, he throws pumpkins for bombs. You should be jealous.

3.) Magneto

Magneto is one of the most powerful mutants in the X-Men universe. A Nazi concentration camp survivor, he became disillusioned with humanity and has vowed to have mutants control the world in order to prevent them from suffering a similar fate. He has the power to control electromagnetic fields. Magneto and telepath and fellow mutant Professor X have had a rocky relationship as seen in the various X-Men films and comic books. He rarely shows mercy to his enemies and can easily overpower forces that outnumber him. The only thing that could ever stop Magneto would be plastic.

2.) Venom

Venom was introduced into the Marvel comic universe in the late 80s and the character quickly exploded in popularity. Venom is actually an alien symbiote that requires a host to survive. The host, in return, gains extra powers and strength. The first host of the symbiote was none other than Spider-Man himself. Once he rejected the host, Eddie Brock became Venom and incidentally absorbed all of Spider-Man’s powers too. There have been other people who have worn the symbiote over the years, but nonetheless, Venom is by far the coolest looking and possibly one of the most feared villains in all of the comic book universe. What makes him so dangerous is that he cannot be sensed by Spider-Man’s spider-sense and is his equal. Would you want to run into that thing in a dark alley? Didn’t think so.

1.) The Joker

The Joker is Batman’s number one enemy. His outfit has been relatively constant throughout the years in the comic books – a purple jacket, with white skin, red lips, and green hair. The Joker is a maniac who has no respect for authority or rules, and in fact, loves to create anarchy. He has been responsible for many events in Bruce Wayne’s life, including killing Robin and Rachel Dawes (in The Dark Knight). His weaponry includes knives, guns, a flower that shoots toxins and other mind-bending tricks. His calling card is a Joker card. The only reason for his existence is because of Batman, and that Batman needs people like him in order to exist (a chicken and egg question of sorts). Fresh off Heath Ledger’s award winning performance as the Joker, it is clearly evident that the character itself is a deep and intriguing one and could have his own film even. The Joker will be around for as long as Batman is around. Quite simply: the top comic book supervillain.

Comic-Con 2009 is currently underway in San Diego, California. It is one of the largest conventions for fans of comics, science fiction, video games, and pop culture. Inspired by Comic-Con, here is a list of the top 5 comic book superheroes of all time.

5.) Superman

Superman (Clark Kent) is one of the most well-known and recognized superheroes around the world and is an American symbol. The story is that he was sent by his parents to Earth as his home planet, Krypton, was being destroyed. Superman has almost every power imaginable: superhuman strength and speed, x-ray vision, heat vision, and almost unlimited stamina are just a few. His weakness is Kryptonite and he loves Lois Lane, facts which almost anyone can regurgitate. His “S” shield logo has been used by millions of people as the basis for works of art (such as tattoos). However, his outfit is a little outdated, and he is a somewhat plain character compared with others on the list. We all know that he is powerful, but sometimes it’s the personality that makes the character, and Superman lacks that.

4.) Wolverine

Wolverine is a member of the X-men, and quickly become a Marvel favorite as the popularity of the X-men grew. Commonly referred to as Logan, his powers include quick regeneration and healing, animal senses, and most famously, metal alloy claws. He is ferocious and brutal and shows no mercy, but yet remains an agent of good. Wolverine is the atypical anti-hero, which can explain his popularity. His outfit is sleek and is a benchmark for “badassness.” Wolverine is a man of few words, just actions. He even received his own movie, explaining his origins and his past.

3.) Silver Surfer

You must be thinking to yourself, huh? Silver Surfer, really? Silver Surfer was once an agent of evil, destroying planets at the behest of his master until he came to Earth and saved it instead of destroying it. He is one of the most powerful superheroes (if you can believe that) and he has the Power Cosmic on his side. What’s that, you ask? It can be anything you want. He can absorb energy and manipulate it at will. He can travel through time, travel faster than the speed of light, read minds, and can survive a black hole. Not to mention he is one of the coolest looking heroes around.

2.) Spider-Man

Spider-Man is quite possibly the most famous Marvel character. He even has his own ride at Universal Studios (Superman has one at Six Flags). Thanks to three blockbuster films, Spider-Man’s popularity has soared. We all know his story: He gets bit by a spider and gains the ability to crawl on walls, shoot webbing, and have superhuman abilities, but also feels regret for his responsibility in his uncle’s death. He also has the spider sense, which enables him to sense things before they happen. His struggle to be Spider-Man while at the same time maintaining his responsibilities as Peter Parker continue to fascinate fans, as does the love story between him and Mary Jane Watson. Spider-Man also has one of the best array of villains to fight against and is someone who you can relate to. We have a little bit of Peter Parker in all of us.

1.) Batman

Batman is by far the coolest superhero, because he isn’t really a superhero at all. He has no magical or mutant powers. He’s just a really buff guy that has ninja-like skills and advanced weaponry. Mostly everyone knows that his parents were killed, his alter ego is Bruce Wayne – ultra millionaire – and that he is afraid of bats, so he dresses like one to share his fear with his enemies. The most recent film, The Dark Knight, helped to bring out Batman’s darker qualities, which is always a good thing for the development of a character. Batman has a policy of not using guns to battle his enemies, which makes him even more badass. Arguably, the Dark Knight has the best villain to battle against in the Joker. Don’t forget the Batmobile and the Batcave either! Batman is the type of person you’d want to party with, and then he will protect you when someone gets in your face.
