6 Things That Have Been Elusive Throughout History

Throughout history, there are always things that capture the imagination. From promises of unimaginable riches to the quest of never-ending knowledge, history has had its fair share of things that have rumored to exist, but have not yet been found or proved. Here are 6 things that have been elusive:

1.) Bigfoot/Yeti/Sasquatch/Abominable Snowman

bigfoot
Not one person has conjured up a single piece of evidence in favor of the existence of Bigfoot or his cousins. Yet, thousands of people every year travel to the American Northwest to camp out with a videocamera, hoping to get a video of Bigfoot to post on YouTube. The draw of Bigfoot is his elusiveness, and he conveniently appears to people who had their camera batteries die, or they didn’t have batteries with them.

2.) Hall of Records

The Hall of Records is supposedly a massive library hidden under the Sphinx in Egypt that contains all sorts of hidden knowledge, such as when the world will end, the location of Atlantis, and advanced knowledge of extraterrestrials. Numerous digs around the Sphinx have not revealed anything conclusive, but there are mysterious passageways and shafts around the area. Imagine how much a Hall of Record Book could sell on eBay if they allowed it but selling artifacts is strictly prohibited. Wonder how many people just stopped searching for the Hall upon learning this fact.

3.) The Lost City of Atlantis

Atlantis
The location of the lost city has yet to be discovered and remains elusive to treasure seekers. Thousands upon thousands of people have traveled to various locations throughout the world seeking to find the fabled city, traveling from Bimini in the Bahamas, to the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean, and even to Antarctica. Google unintentionally stirred up hype for Atlantis as some Google Ocean satellite imagery revealed a strange set of patterns in the Atlantic Ocean. Google claims the lines came from their boat, but the Atlantis fire remains lit.

4.) Loch Ness Monster

I’ve always had the position that if the Loch Ness Monster exists, just drain the damn lake! If it really exists, then it will be flopping around on the now empty lake. Unfortunately, the Scottish don’t find that funny. Many photos have been revealed as hoaxes, including the famous “Surgeon’s Photo.” Nessie has also inspired other lakes to have their own friendly neighborhood lake monsters as well.

5.) Fountain of Youth

The Fountain of Youth contains water that will make anyone who drinks it youthful and vibrant again. Seafarers such as Juan Ponce de Leon and Hernando de Soto searched Florida hoping to become young again. While they never found anything, the legacy of their search led to a tourist trap in St. Augustine.

6.) The Holy Grail

Holy Grail
There is no definitive answer on what the Holy Grail actually is. While the conventional point of view is that the Grail is a cup, plate, or bowl that Jesus used at the Last Supper, Dan Brown thinks the Grail is Mary Magdalene. The history of the Grail also changes, depending on who you talk to and who read The Da Vinci Code. Seekers of the Grail have not been discouraged by thousands of years of not finding it though, and there will probably be a thousand more years of coming up empty.
