Facebook. We all have some sort of love-hate relationship with it. Sometimes it’s like a crack addiction, other times, well, it’s annoying as all hell. But no matter what anyone thinks about it, there is one thing that is certain – it is destroying lives. How, you may ask? Read on to find out.
1.) Facebook is bringing out the stalker in all of us
Social networks can be dangerous. With the introduction of the Facebook News Feed, everyone can pretty much know what you’re doing. They will look through all your photos (even if they are just a friend of a friend), they will know what events you are going to and what you had for breakfast (if you’re up for breakfast). There’s even a term for this, called “Facebook-stalking.” So don’t be surprised if you’re on Facebook and someone IMs you in the Facebook Chat saying “I’ve been Facebook-stalking you, sorry you got dumped” or something to that effect.
2.) Facebook is destroying friendships
Facebook can destroy friendships immediately or over time. People start to virtually hit on their best friend’s new ex-boyfriend/girlfriend via their status update. People start to be lazy and not actually hang out with others, but since that person had a conversation with someone over Facebook Chat, they feel like they did actually hang out and won’t have to speak to them for a couple days. Facebook destroys friendships over political and religious status updates that others don’t agree with, leading to the biggest sign your friendship is over: de-friending. Facebook also just came out with vanity URLs (where you can have facebook.com/yourname), and that can destroy friendships too. Not convinced? See below.
3.) Facebook and their games consume our lives
All hell has broken loose on the application side of Facebook. There are over 30,000 applications now. Most of them are pointless, however, there are some that have consumed people. One such example is FarmVille. FarmVille is a game where you manage a virtual farm and plant crops based on time. So if you planted strawberries, for example, you’ll have to wait 4 hours until you can harvest them and get the cash. According to Inside Social Games, FarmVille has nearly 51 million users (Facebook in total has 300 million!). In fact, FarmVille has so taken over our daily lives that this happens.
